How to use API keys
HTTP Header (recommended)
curl -X POST /api/v1/urls/shorten \
  -H "X-API-Key: sq_your_key_here" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"originalUrl":"https://destination.com"}'
Query Parameter
curl "/api/v1/urls/shorten?api_key=sq_your_key" \
  -X POST \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"originalUrl":"https://destination.com"}'
Security: API keys grant full programmatic access — treat them like passwords. Store keys in environment variables or a secrets manager, never in source code.

Rotation: Create a new key, update your integrations, then delete the old one. The Requests counter shows total usage per key so you can track which are active.

Revocation: Disable a key instantly without deleting it — useful to block a compromised key while you update integrations. The full key is only shown once at creation.
